"A night of purpose in the city of lights"
Образование | Гимназия Квинса

For a Queensie (a resident of Queens) being in the city of lights at night — wandering the busy, bright streets, gazing up at the illuminated buildings–is a beautiful feeling. Yet, going there to attend an important monthly meeting with members of the worldknown UJA Federation is absolutely sublime. On December 18, 2008, Russian –speaking members of «ACHDUT» and «UJA» met on the 6th floor of the colossal UJA building on 59th and Lexington to get acquainted with one another.

The meeting included food for the body–mouth–watering cookies, salads and wraps–- and that for the mind and soul, in the form of Rabbi Paley\'s words. Rabbi Michael Paley, the scholar in residence and director of the Jewish Resource Center of the UJA–Federation of New York, led a mindriveting discussion on Ethics and the various approaches it entails. There is, for instance, Immanuel Kant\'s approach where the concentration is placed on what is right and wrong. The one that I found to be most interesting however was the idea of the circle of intimates where the question is, «who do you care about most?» He challenged the minds of the group gathered around the wooden table posing questions such as, «If you had to choose between saving the life of your mother or your child, who would you choose?» Rabbi Paley also spoke about Judaism\'s attitude towards money; «Judaism is the only religion that believes that wealth is a blessing and transforms your life», he vigorously stated. Previous to this discussion, I always thought otherwise. The Rabbi ended off by mentioning the high ethical values of the UJA, which did not invest in Madoff Securities.

His dazzling speech was followed by Lilly Wainberg, the Director of Russian Division, as well as a couple veteran volunteers\' comments on their experience with the UJA–all of whom showered it with praise. They mentioned that UJA willingly accepts volunteers regardless of their reason for volunteering. To conclude the event, one of the senior members of the Russian division, mentioned that future events would include a discussion on fundraising and how to run a non–corporate organization, all topics that «ACHDUT» hopes to learn from. All in all, it was a night well spent in the city of lights.
